Remote Online Notary services support a wide range of personal, legal, and business documents, including contracts and agreements, powers of attorney, financial and loan documents, business filings, employment and human resources forms, healthcare directives, affidavits, travel consent forms for minors, vehicle title transfers and DMV related documents.
Certain documents are not eligible for remote notarization under Virginia law. Clients are encouraged to confirm eligibility prior to scheduling.
Is Online Notary legal in my state?
Remote Online Notarization (RON) is fully authorized under Virginia law and recognized nationwide. Virginia was the first state to enact RON legislation in 2011. As long as the notary is physically located in Virginia at the time of notarization, documents may be notarized for signers located anywhere in the United States or abroad.
Under the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the United States Constitution, notarial acts lawfully performed in Virginia are generally valid in all other states including those that do not permit their own notaries to perform RON. The federal ESIGN Act further affirms the legal validity of electronic signatures nationwide.
While most institutions accept properly executed remote notarizations, some organizations such as courts, title companies, or government agencies may impose additional requirements or restrictions on electronically notarized documents. Certain documents including wills, vital records, and some court filings are not eligible for RON under Virginia law. For this reason, Virginia Verified recommends confirming acceptance requirements with the receiving party prior to notarization.
